Now let’s take a closer look at investment motivations, attitudes towards investment and the benefits of investing. What motivates a person to invest, rather than spend money immediately? The most common answer is to accumulate wealth and provide for the future. To increase wealth, people need to manage their savings to make them grow. What they do to increase their savings over time is called investment.
Thus, investment is the commitment of money for a period of time in order to derive larger future returns. The definition of investment is to sacrifice present value for future value.
It is important to understand the risk and returns of investments. This is where our Financial Planning Managers can guide and help you make the right decisions. The graph above provides a perspective on the equation between the risks and returns of several investment assets. Please note that while the graph is not illustrated to proportion, it gives you a relative idea of the level of risk and expected return of those assets.
Retaining cash deposits can earn a rate of return. However most people do not consider the eroding power of inflation on their savings. So although it is important to keep sufficient money for day-to-day use, deposit accounts alone may not be the best way to make your money work hard enough for you. History has shown that over the longer term, equity based investments have outperformed bank deposits.
Whether you are a cautious investor or a more adventurous one, you have a wide range of investments to choose from.
However, it is always wise to diversify your portfolio to balance the risk/return equation.
Bank Deposits
Traditionally the most common form of investment, they offer capital security and are linked to interest rate movements. These investments should form part of your portfolio to give you immediate access to some of your capital for everyday needs.
Capital Protected Products
This type of investment offers security of capital as well as the option to benefit from the growth of either an index, or a basket of shares. If you have a conservative investment outlook and are looking for potentially greater returns compared to bank deposits, these funds could be ideal for you.
Mutual Funds
These investments combine your money with that of other investors in one big pool of money. The fund manager uses that money to pursue one or more investment objectives, such as long-term growth or income, by purchasing stocks and bonds from many different markets. The value of these investments fluctuates according to the investments held within the fund. They offer the benefits of diversification, professional management, liquidity and convenience.
Hedge Funds
These funds utilise a variety of financial instruments to balance risk, enhance returns and minimise the correlation with equity and bond markets. Many hedge funds are flexible in their investment options as professional fund managers can choose different methods of investment compared to those used by mutual fund managers. Although traditionally associated with higher risk/reward, HSBC is also able to offer some of these funds with a capital protection feature where the investment is held for the long term.
Islamic Investments
At HSBC, we cater for Islamic investors as well. All our Islamic funds are compliant with Shariah Law and vary in design from mutual to capital protected funds. They have all been through a screening process, which excludes companies that operate against Shariah principles.
Specialised Funds
If you are a more adventurous investor, you can include these funds in your portfolio. While they offer the potential for higher returns, they also carry a greater risk as illustrated in the previous graph.
Our Wealth Management Service goes beyond investments. We also offer advice on the following areas:
Protection Planning
We review your plans and needs in this area as it forms part of your overall financial security for you and your family’s future.
